The Coalition works with the Kansas Legislature to make changes to COLA bills and KPERS benefits. We lobby legislators, helping them understand the needs of Kansas public retirees.

Emailing Legislators


Reaching out to legislators can be a nerve wracking experience, but don't worry, we've made it easy. Follow the recommendations and remember to keep your email brief and to the point, brevity is important. Simplify your message to guarantee it gets read.
Email subject:
  • Keep it to 30 characters or less
  • Make it time sensitive or urgent is necessary 
  • "Will you please [take action] for _____?"
  • OR, "Will you please voice your support for a COLA?"
  • OR, "Please vote for bill _____ which provides KPERS retirees with a COLA."
Email body:
  • Make the first sentence/paragraph a summary of the rest of the email.
  • Add additional details to explain your point.
  • Optional: add link(s) to website information you want your legislator to see
Things to consider:
  • Do not try to prove your knowledge of the English vocabulary, keep it simple.
  • Add data if you have it, but not so much that it is overwhelming.
  • Be brief. Be concise. Legislators are busy and you want to grab their attention without overwhelming them.
